I’ll take AWAMN to the next level, says Oriyomi

By Sunday Alade

PRESIDENT, National and Lagos State Chapter, Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, (AWAMN), Comrade David Oluwasegun Oriyomi, has promised to take the association to the next level.
Oriyomi who is the CEO of Excellens Links International Company, a Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operator in Oshodi, made the promise during his interview with The Harbinger. Excerpts:
How do you intend to curb the re-occurrence of the face-off between PSP operators and state government?
This is by maintaining a cordial relationship with the government, PSP operators and holding a regular meeting with LAWMA.
What is your plan to take AWAMN to the next level?
We shall professionalise the industry, pursue its national spread and make sure it has international recognition. Also, we are planning to build a strategic alliance with strong international organizations;  visit the First Waste to Energy Plant at Addis-Ababa in Ethiopia, as well as attend Waste Expo in USA and 50th Anniversary of International Solid Waste World Congress in Rotterdam.
Any  plan to improve AWAMN?
We shall set up committees and zonal arms of the association that will fit into the state chapter.
What welfare package do you have for the members?
We shall create an enabling environment for the progress of PSP operators and establish a Health Insurance and Welfare Pension scheme for all PSP operators' staff, as well as maintain a social diary for them. Also, we shall operate a cooperative society to further empower members and hold annual banquets and awards to appreciate hardworking and committed members.
How would the association fit into Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Blue Box Initiative programme?
We shall continue to identify with his programmes, most especially the ones that anchor on the engagement of youths.
Don't you think the initiative would affect the sharing formula between the PSP Operators and LAWMA?
I don’t think so, because Governor Sanwo-Olu is a considerable man who would not like to strain the existing cordial relationship between PSP Operators and LAWMA.
Would this increase the PSP tariff?
Blue Box Initiative is a separate project that does not influence the increment of the tariff. Don't forget that PSP operators and staff patronise the same market that people from other businesses do. Since N30,000 is being approved by the Federal Government as a minimum wage; the PSP Operators’ staff have been clamouring for increments in salary too.
If so, what percentage increment would it be?
The increment will not be in isolation of all the stakeholders, as everybody is expected to have an input on it before the final approval by the legislative and executive arms of the Government. The last increment was done when the cost of diesel per litre was N20. Today the cost of diesel per litre is N225 which depicts the great difference that we have been managing. With the maintenance of trucks and staff that are clamouring for salary increments and the purchase of other essential things.
How would PSP operators increase service to the people?
The conditions at which PSP operators operate with insufficient dump-sites that are always jampacked have made PSP operators' drivers and staff sleep at dump-sites for three days before gaining access to dispose the collected refuse, which is very hectic especially in the rainy season.
In what way can this problem be solved, since it has been lingering from the past administrations?
Building more Transfer Loading Stations is the answer. Presently there are only three transfer loading stations that need to be increased. Gov. Sanwo-Olu has promised to build additional transfer loading stations across the state where the refuse would be ferried to dumpsites by trailers overnight to decongest transfer loading stations.

How do you intend to recover the outstanding debts owed by commercial and residential customers?
We are trusting on the legislative and executive arms of the government on the need to revitalize the customary court to help recover the waste debts
Can we know your other execos members?
