*Democratic ideals not yet entrenched — ACF *Nigeria sliding into civilian dictatorship — Momodu AS Nigerians celebrate 32 years after annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, mixed reactions yesterday greeted the status of democratic governance in the country. On June 6, 2018, former President, Muhammadu Buhari declared June 12 as the new date to mark Democracy Day in commemoration of Abiola’s election. The June 12 election was annulled by former Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd). In 2019, Buhari assented to the Public Holiday Act Amendment Bill which made June 12 Democracy Day in Nigeria and a public holiday.
