Right to basic education: Buhari’s refusal to assent to bill unacceptable — Falana

CHAIRMAN, Alliance on Surviving Covid-19 and Beyond, ASCAB, Femi Falana, yesterday, berated President Muhammadu Buhari over his refusal to assent to the bill on the right of every Nigerian child to basic education, describing it as unacceptable. He also insisted that the President lacked the power to withhold assent to constitutional amendment bills passed by the National Assembly and the Houses of Assembly of the states, under Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution. Falana, in a statement, said: “Sometime in January 2023, the National Assembly forwarded 35 Constitutional Amendment Bills to President Muhammadu Buhari for his assent. For reasons best known to him, the President assented to 16 out of the 35 Bills. “Out of the 16 approved by the President, seven amended the names of some local government areas by correcting typographical errors.
