4 killed as police, gunmen exchange fire

As l2 persons missing, 17 houses burnt in communal clash Four persons were reportedly killed in a gun battle between gunmen and security operatives in Aguluzigbo community, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State. This came as two people have been declared missing and 17 houses burnt, while property worth millions of naira lost in a communal clash that ravaged the Ikolo community in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State, yesterday. It was gathered that the gun battle in Anambra community, which occurred early morning of yesterday,  raged till the arrival of reinforcement of combined operatives, who repelled the attack. How 44-year-old man drowned

A yet-to-be identi fied middle aged man  has drowned in Agba Dam area of Ilorin, Kwara State. It was gathered that the tragedy occurred on Monday about 10:50 hours, according to the statement  by th the spokesman of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle.  The statement read: “The Fire Service responded to a distress call from one Mr. Onikepe Bolaji reporting a body found in Agba Dam. The firemen swiftly embarked on a rescue operation, inflating their boat upon arrival. “They successfully recovered the body of a 44-year-old man, who had drowned. The rescue team’s expertise was evident and the recovered body was handed over to Achimugu Samuel of the Nigeria Police.”  The spokesman said those present at the scene include the Commissioner for Water Resources, Usman Lade and the Permanent Secretary, Minister of Water Resources.   The commissioner commended and expressed appreciation to the rescue team for their exemplary performance in handling the situation. 3 arrested for robbing, rapping students

Three people have been arrested in connection with the the robbery and rape of some students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade; living at Ode Remo and Ipara in Remo North Local Government Area of the state. Those arrested, according to a statement by the Ogun State Police command Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, are Taiwo Oredoyin, Taiwo Kuti and Folorunsho Saheed. Church cancels wedding over bride's pregnancy

THERE was confusion, at the Assemblies of God Church, Ehere, Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia State, as the priest of the church, identified as Reverend Eze Ogba, declined to wed a groom and bride over reports that  the bride was pregnant. It was gathered that the couple, Mr. Israel Kennedy and his bride, Miss Rose, as well as their relations had stormed the church for the ceremony slated to hold after church service.  However, the church was said to have ordered a pregnancy test to be conducted on the bride, which later revealed that she was pregnant. Following the development, the priest of the church announced that the wedding had been cancelled. The situation brought confusion into the church as the families made frantic efforts to have the board of the church rescind the decision, while the priest was seen interviewing the bride, who pleaded her innocence. LAGOS State Goverment, has destroyed 1,50O, impounded motorcycles, popularly called Okada over violation of state traffic laws. The state government, through the Ministry of Transportation, carried out the exercise at the crush plant,  Task Force Yard, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos. Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Wale Musa, led the delegation that monitored the operation. Osiyemi, who addressed newsmen, said over 1,500 motorcycles impounded in the last six months, were slated for crushing as part of the zero tolerance on the illegal activities. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Wednesday offered scholarships to indigent pupils at his alma mater in Jada, Adamawa State. OAU lecturer found dead in office

Late Dr. Ayo Ojediran A lecturer of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has slumped and died in his office. The deceased, Dr. Ayo Ojediran, lectured at the Department of Science and Technology Education, Faculty of Education in the school. It was gathered that the lecturer was found dead in his office on Tuesday by some of his colleagues. Some of his colleagues described his death as unfortunate, noting that the deceased was a “complete gentleman.” A close ally of the deceased, Ayodeji Obisesan, on his Facebook page, described the deceased as someone willing to help at any time. “Such a very nice and humble man to the core. The suspect ...as a bird with a human face and attempted to hurt him THE Kaduna State Police Command has arrested a man from Madakiya village in Zangon Kataf Local Government Area of the state, who allegedly killed his father for appearing like a mysterious bird in his dreams.  The  20-year-old  suspect, David Felix, had confessed that he killed his father at their residence, who had been appearing in his dreams as a bird with a human face and attempted to hurt him. According to the Command’s PPRO, Mansir Hassan, the incident happened on September 30, 2O23, and the man was arrested and during an interrogation at the State Police Command Headquarters, he admitted to the crime and  regretted his action. “He said he killed his father after waking up from sleep and used a pestle to hit him while asleep. 4 dead as truck crushes bus, tricycle

Four persons lost their lives with scores injured, following an auto crash on Aba Waterside River bridge in Ogbor-Hill, Aba, Abia State.  Vanguard gathered that the crash occurred as a truck conveying a 40-foot container, was said to have lost its brakes, rammed into a car and tricycle, killing four persons on the spot. An eyewitness told Vanguard that the truck while descending from Opobo Junction axis on Aba Ikot-Ekpene road swerved due to the break failure when it hit another broken down truck on the bridge. The crash into the broken down truck led it to collide with a Sienna bus and a tricycle as well as another stationary vehicle on the bridge. Old Naira notes remain legal tender beyond Dec 31 — CBN

THE Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said that the old Naira notes of N1,000, N500  and N200 remain legal tender ad-infinitum.  A statement issued by the Director of Corporate Communications of the bank, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin, in stated that the old notes remain legal tender even beyond December 31, 2023. It said, therefore, that the December 31, 2023 deadline which the apex earlier set for the old notes to cease to be legal tender was no longer relevant. According to the CBN, all its branches across the country will continue to issue and receive both old notes and redesigned notes from Deposit Money Banks (DMBs). Police, bandits in gun battle

...As many killed, others injured Police operatives in Zamfara State, weekend, engaged bandits in a gun battle at Gada community in Bungudu Local Government Area of the state, where many of the hoodlums were killed and several others ran away with gun shot wounds.   The bandits, wielding dangerous weapons, rode on several motorcycles, invaded Gada community, killed eight locals and rustled many cows. Spokesperson of the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar said they were able to chase the bandits, killed many while several others ran away with gun shot wounds.   He said they retrieved 10 rustled cows and some sheep, adding that only six locals were killed by the bandits. 20 fishermen drowned

NO fewer than 20 fishermen have drowned after a boat conveying them on the stretch of the Benue River capsized. The incident, which happened, yesterday comprises fishermen from Ibi and Gindin Doruwa in Wukari Local Government Area of the state.  The Taraba State Water Transportation Chairman, Jidda Suleiman, confirmed the incident to newsmen, adding that the boat mishap happened between Anyeci area of Wukari council of Taraba State and Chinkai axis of Benue State.  According to him, “I was informed that the fishermen converged and boarded the boat to Kwara State in search for greener pasture, and along the way, they had an accident and over 20 people have died.  “Twelve people out of the dead bodies are from Ibi while, some from Gareji, in Gindin Doruwa, Wukari council of Taraba State. “It has been the tradition of our fishermen in Taraba State that once it is close to December, some will travel to Cameroon, some to Chad and other places to fish till August of the following year. “It&#

Bandits, vigilantes engage in gun battle

TENSION gripped residents of the agrarian community of Sepeteri in Saki East Local Government Area of Oyo State, yesterday, as bandits, suspected to be Fulani herders and local vigilantes engaged in gun fuel. The fracas erupted after the bandits attacked and abducted two persons at an event near old Oyo National Park. The attack led to the death of a man. After the attack, the bandits escaped into the National Park Forest Reserve with their abductees. Extortion: Commuters stranded as danfo drivers withdraw services

Commuters were stranded, yesterday as commercial bus operators, popularly called danfo drivers of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, operating in the Abule-Egba-Iyana-Ipaja axis, suspended services to protest alleged extortion and exorbitant fines on members by the state traffic officials and the police. Unfortunately, workers and school pupils were stranded at various bus stops waiting endlessly for danfo busses. Some danfo drivers, who dared to operate were either forced to turn back or had their buses seized by NURTW enforcement team in compliance with the directive. A pastor of Living Faith Church and lecturer at the Akawe Torkula Polytechnic, Makurdi, Benue State, Dr. Emmanuel Aime, was, yesterday mobbed and narrowly escaped death after he was accused of snatching the genital of a young man.  An eyewitness said the pastor was mobbed after he came out of one of the commercial banks on New Otukpo Road about 10a.m., when a young man confronted him and raised the alarm that his genital was missing.  He said the alarm attracted other persons suspected to be the cohorts of the young man, who decended on the pastor asking him to return the missing genital.  According to him, “As he was being beaten, other persons joined in the mob action.
