Ban violation: Lagos crushes over 1,500 seized Okada
LAGOS State Goverment, has destroyed 1,50O, impounded motorcycles, popularly called Okada over violation of state traffic laws.
The state government, through the Ministry of Transportation, carried out the exercise at the crush plant, Task Force Yard, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, and Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr. Wale Musa, led the delegation that monitored the operation.
Osiyemi, who addressed newsmen, said over 1,500 motorcycles impounded in the last six months, were slated for crushing as part of the zero tolerance on the illegal activities.
The commissioner also urged the Okada riders to embrace the many alternative modes of transportation provided by the government as there were plans to inject more first and last mile buses into the metropolis.
According to Osiyemi, “I urge the riders to continue to stay off the roads because the crushing exercise and enforcement will be totally sustained.
“There is no going back because it’s government policy and government does not joke about its decisions.”
Osiyemi said the regular crushing exercise was to further show Okada operators, riders and passengers alike to stay off the ban areas to avoid three years imprisonment if apprehended and prosecuted in line with the Transport Reform Law (TSRL) 2018.
“The ban on Okada in specified regions is crucial for maintaining order, reducing risks associated with unauthorised motorcycle operation and also improve security,” Osiyemi added.
The prohibited local government areas include Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere and Eti-Osa.
The Local Council Development Areas where the ban covers include Ojodu, Onigbongbo, Lagos Island East, Yaba and Coker Aguda, Itire-Ikate, Eti-Osa West, Iru Victoria Island, Ikoyi-Obalende, Ikosi-Isheri, Agboyi-Ketu, Isolo, Ejigbo, Bariga and Odi-Olowo.
