Voter data leak: Police arrest INEC officer, quiz Wike’s aide
Senior Police sources has confirmed that operatives of the Force Intelligence Department Intelligence Response Team, IRT, have commenced investigations into the unauthorised database abuse and the leaking of classified national document belonging to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Towards this end, an official of INEC has been arrested while a top aide of the FCT Minister is said to have been interrogated by the operatives over the leaked document.
Sources told Vanguard that IRT operatives have detained the INEC official, who is seconded to the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, while investigations is ongoing.
The aide of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT minister, was said to have been invited to the Guzape headquarters of the IRT while it was confirmed that the petition written to the Police on the matter emanated from INEC headquarters.
The petition alleged criminal conspiracy, leaking of classified documents and conduct capable of breaching public peace among others.
Sources disclosed that preliminary investigations traced the unauthorised data breach to events of May 29, 2026, when a group of concerned protesters, staged a protest at the INEC AMAC office, blocking the facility’s exit gate with vehicles, and accusing the commission of irregularities in ongoing primary election.
It was during protests that the AMAC Electoral Office discovered that one of the prominent figures leading the protest was popular Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike
The minister’s aide reportedly told investigators that he posted a video of the protest at the AMAC office on his social media platforms, noting that this followed complaint from an INEC official who contacted him through Facebook Messenger to report attempts to blackmail INEC by protesters who were allegedly not registered voters in the FCT.
The INEC official further promised to provide proof in the form of a temporary voter’s card, which was later sent to the minister’s aide through WhatsApp.
The Police sources disclosed that investigations is yet to be concluded in the matter.
