Deploy more security personnel to schools in border communities — NUT

THE Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, Osun state chapter has appealed to the federal and state governments to deploy more security personnel, including operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, the police, and the Department of State Services, DSS, to schools in remote areas and border communities to prevent attacks and kidnappings by bandits.

The Osun state NUT made the call during their emergency meeting with the state government over rising security threats facing schools across the nationwide.

Also, the development follows renewed demands by the NUT in the state for improved security in schools located in remote and border communities adjoining neighbouring states.

According to the chairman of the NUT in Osun State, Babalola Babatunde, said the deployment of additional security personnel to schools in remote areas had become imperative to prevent attacks and kidnappings by bandits.

Babatunde said: “Schools located near forests and border communities are often far from urban centres, making them vulnerable targets for bandits and kidnappers. Being a teacher should not be a crime.”

He stated that the union had requested the deployment of more security personnel, including operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, the police, and the Department of State Services, DSS, to schools in border communities.

He added that members of the union were also set to participate in a nationwide solidarity rally declared by the national NUT leadership, to demand the unconditional release of the Ogbomoso schoolchildren and teachers abducted on May 15.
