Bonfire Tragedy: UNN condemns infiltration of varsity by miscreants

THE Management of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka on Sunday, condemned the infiltration of the University by miscreants.

The condemnation came on the heels of violence, which claimed the life of a businessman, identified as Chiebonam Nweze, after he attended a bonfire night organised by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies, UNN, on Friday night.

Recall that the victim was stabbed to death on the UNN campus when he was assailed by suspects who are now being investigated by the police in Enugu.

Meanwhile, while reassuring on the safety of  the environment, UNN Management, in a statement released on Sunday through the Acting Public Relations Officer, Inya Egwu, has banned students’ social activities beyond 6 PM on the campuses at Nsukka, Enugu metropolis, and Ituku Ozalla.

Part of the statement read “The Management of the University of Nigeria wishes to inform the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred on Friday, 12th September 2025, during a   bonfire night organised by the students association of   the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

“The event was infiltrated by miscreants from a neighboring community, who instigated violence."

In the course of the disturbance, a guest at the event, Mr. Chiebonam Nweze, was stabbed. Sadly, despite prompt efforts to save his life, he passed away before receiving medical attention at the University’s Medical Center.

“Investigations have confirmed that neither the deceased nor the assailants were students of the University of Nigeria.

“We wish to assure the public that the University Security Unit, working in close collaboration with the Anti-Cult Unit of the Nigeria Police, has successfully apprehended all those responsible for the tragic incident.

“The Management of the University of Nigeria expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the late Mr. Chiebonam Nweze and prays for comfort during this time of grief.

“In light of the unfortunate development, the University has reviewed its guidelines for student social activities.

“Henceforth, all such activities must be held strictly during the daytime and under the supervision of the University Security Unit. Social events of any kind will not be permitted on our campuses beyond 6:00 p.m.

“The University of Nigeria remains fully committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all members of its community and will continue to take every necessary measure to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.”
