3 killed in Badagry over plan to testify in court

Three elderly individuals were shot dead in a suspected case of murder and conspiracy in the Yovoyan community, Gberefu Beach area of Badagry, Lagos State, on April 1, 2025.

Confirming the incident, Lagos Police Command spokesperson, Mr. Benjamin Hundeyin, said the attack was allegedly carried out by Charles Atideka, who is now deceased. 

According to police reports, Atideka allegedly opened fire on Muji Onilude (75), Richard Atideka (70), and Charity Atideka (59). All three victims were confirmed dead at the Badagry General Hospital shortly after the attack.

He said: “Two of the victims were his relatives. Preliminary investigation indicates that they were scheduled to testify against him in court. To prevent this, he killed them and fled. Unfortunately, he  was arrested and rushed to the hospital the next day where he died. With his death, we’ve lost the prime suspect, but investigation continues.

“An autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause of his death, amid unconfirmed reports. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Yaba for further investigation. The victims’ bodies have been deposited at the hospital morgue.

"Meanwhile, an alleged accomplice, Bright Sonu (33), was arrested at the scene and remains in custody.” 

Describing the incident as both tragic and calculated, Hundeyin said possible motives such as family disputes or land conflicts were being explored.

Also, in Ikotun, a 23-year-old man, Sodiq Ojolowo, was arrested for allegedly raping a 47-year-old woman and attacking a neighbour, who tried to intervene. The incident occurred in the early hours of March 26. Both victims are receiving medical treatment while the suspect remains in police custody.

Hundeyin assured that investigations into all three cases were ongoing and urged the public to stay alert and report suspicious activities.
