Mojisola Meranda: Lagos Assembly's first female speaker
Mojisola Meranda was appointed Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, following the impeachment of Mudashir Obasa over several allegations of fraud.
Meranda, previously serving as Obasa’s deputy, was sworn in immediately after his removal.

Early Life
Born on August 16, 1980, Mojisola Meranda hails from the prominent Akapo family in Lagos.
Family Background
The 44-year-old legislator is a descendant of royal lineage. Her late father, Chief Taoreed Lawal-Akapo, served as the Ojora of Lagos between 1977 and 1993. Her mother, Princess M.A Lawal Akapo, belongs to the Ojora, Aromire, Onitana, Oloto, and Oniru royal families.
Education
Meranda began her education at St. Charles Nursery and Primary School and later moved to Randle Primary School in Surulere (1986–1992). She attended Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School (1992–1996) and completed her secondary education at Ansar-ud-Deen Secondary School (1996–1998). In 2013, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Administration from Lagos State University.
Lagos Heritage
Meranda’s roots are deeply tied to Lagos’ royal history. Her brother, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, is the Oniru of Iru Land.
Journey in Politics
She is one of the four women serving in the Lagos State House of Assembly. Meranda was first elected to the Assembly in 2015 after holding various roles at the Apapa local government. She was subsequently re-elected in 2019 and 2023.
Her political interest was shaped by her upbringing in a politically active family and her experience working as a personal assistant to Olumuyiwa Gbadegesin, a senior special assistant on technology and special projects to Bola Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State governor.
