Protest: Lagos APC, 57 council chairmen sue for peace
*As NANS calls for constructive dialogue with govts
THE Lagos State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC and Conference 57, a group representing the 57 council chairmen of the 20 local government areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, in the state, have called on Nigerians to shun the planned nationwide protest over harsh economy situation and embrace peace in the interest of the country at large.
Also, Conference 57, while urging youths to invest their efforts in nation-building rather than engaging in protests, maintained that the organisers of the planned August 1 protest do not mean well for the country.
Meanwhile, members of National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, Lagos chapter have distanced themselves from the planned nationwide protests, directing members to rather join a planned solidarity walk in the interest of continued stability and peace in the state.
Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Mr Seye Oladejo made the plea in a statement, yesterday, entitled: “Lagos APC sues for peace.”
The statement read in part: ”Lagos chapter of APC wishes to lend its voice to the appeal of several well-meaning Nigerians to all and sundry to let peace reign in our land at this critical time of our history.
“While we acknowledge peaceful protests as an integral component of democratic governance, the predictable attendant violence and loss of lives and property remain undesirable.
“In the past days, we have watched with keen interest, most especially, in the social media, the mobilisation for the protest, laced with bitterness, hate speeches, hostility divisiveness and threats to citizens with contrary opinions.
“The mass destruction of public and private assets during the #Endsars protest, which started as a harmless demonstration remains fresh in our memory.
“The loss of targeted critical infrastructure across various sectors set our dear state back by decades and in billions.
“We urge the federal, state and local governments to remain sensitive, attentive, receptive and responsible to the yearnings of our terming population, most especially the youths, in order to continue to engender confidence and uphold its onerous constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property".
Barrister Kolade Alabi, Chairman of Conference 57, through Olusesan Daini,Public Relations Officer of Conference 57, at a media briefing in Lagos, after an emergency meeting with chairmen, yesterday, stressed that youths should channel their energy inward, focusing on creative and innovative contributions to support Nigeria.
Alabi urged young people to invest their efforts in nation-building rather than engaging in protests, which he believes do not offer constructive solutions to the country’s challenges.
NANS calls for constructive dialogue with govts
Also, NANS members have called for constructive dialogue with governments in achieving collective goals.
NANS made the declaration on at a press briefing in Ikeja, after a joint meeting with students’ leaders across tertiary institutions.
Alli Lekan-Idris, NANS Chairman, Lagos, on behalf of over 10 universities' students and other students’ leaders, described the nationwide planned protest against hardship in the country as “absolutely uncalled for.”
“We are not denying the fact that things and economy are actually hard and tough right now. We believe governments are doing everything to address the situation,” Lekan-Idris stated.
They expressed support for the administration of the Governor Bababjide Sanwo-Olu and vowed to protect Lagos from another #Endsar saga in the name of protest proposed to commence next month.
Lekan-Idris highlighted the various interventions of the Sanwo-olu’s administration in Basic and Tertiary Education to include increase in annual bursary allocation to indigent students, payment of West African Examination Council, WAEC, fees to the tune of N1.5 billion.
He however, noted that students in Lagos will stage a solidarity walk in support of the state government between August 1, to 10, to prevent vandalisation of public infrastructure in Lagos.
