UNILAG: Students injured in stampede, as mgt shifts exam

AN unspecified number of students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, were injured on Tuesday while rushing to enter examination halls to write the General Studies (GST) examination for the first semester in the 2023/2024 academic session.

The stampede resulted from attempts by students to enter the halls that were not big enough to accommodate all of them at the same time.

It was gathered that some students arrived on the campus as early as 7am, but were not called to write their papers until 6 pm, leading to the students struggling to gain entry by all means. The injured students were rushed to the university clinic.

Meanwhile, the management of UNILAG has suspended the conduct of the exam.  

In a statement by the Head of the Communications Unit, Alaga Ibrahim, the management said the decision followed a review of the issues that have affected the conduct of the examination.  

Ibrahim said: “This suspension followed a review of the various issues that have affected the conduct of the examination in the last two days. Please note that all inconveniences caused by this suspension are deeply regretted, and a new date/schedule for the GST examination will be shared appropriately.”

Parents decry situation

Meanwhile, the Parents Forum of the university has frowned at the untidy arrangements made for the conduct of the examination by the school authorities.

A statement posted on the forum’s Whatsapp group, seen by Vanguard, read: “Dear esteemed parents of the University of Lagos, Akoka, the executive board of this forum wishes to let you know that we are not unaware of this unpalatable development.  

"Please know that we are not happy with the experiences that some of our children went through to write their GST examination yesterday (Tuesday). We register our outright displeasure and wish to use this medium to appeal to parents to please calm down and allow appropriate administrative measures to be applied to rescue the situation.

“Please remember that members of this executive board were first parents before we became members of the exco, so we also feel the same pains, and frustrations that you feel. We are all not happy about this. But we appeal to everyone to please be calm and allow an amicable resolution to be achieved.”

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.
