Trailer kills Kwarapoly student in Ilorin, injures 2 others

A yet-to-be-identified student of the Institute of Technology (IOT), Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin was yesterday, killed at the Sango roundabout area of the state capital, while two others sustained injuries.

It was gathered that the three students were on the motorcycle on their way for lecture at the Institute of Technology centre in Adewale area of Ilorin when the tragedy occurred.

The driver of the truck heading towards Maraba from Sango was said to have lost control while approaching the roundabout before hitting a vehicle in its front, which in turn hit the motorcycle with the three students.

Vanguard gathered that one of the students on the motorcycle whose forehead seriously hit the pavement by the roadside died instantly, while the other two, who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital.

Police officers from the Traffic Control Unit of the command were still controlling traffic at the time of filing this report.

The spokesperson of Kwara State Polytechnic, Hajia Halimat Garuba, confirmed the incident in an interview with Vanguard.

She said: “Sadly, one of our students in IOT died in that accident. They were said to be on the motorcycle to attend lecture when their motorcycle was violently hit by the trailer.

“Two other students who were also involved are said to be receiving treatment in a hospital. I can’t get you the details of their identities for now.”

The spokesperson of Kwara State Police Command, ASP Adetoun Adeyemi, who also confirmed the incident, said the driver of the truck has been detained by the police at the A Division, Challenge Area of Ilorin, while the truck has been confiscated.

“It’s very unfortunate that a student’s life was lost to the incident. Two others are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital. Though investigation has commenced, it’s annoying that the driver of the truck could not slow down to obey the big bump at the roundabout and lost control.’’
