Police arrest town crier for burning church

ONE Ogban Emmanuel has been arrested by operatives of Zone 6 of the Nigeria Police with headquarters in Calabar for allegedly instigating the burning down of a church in Adim village for preaching against the community” ‘s tradition.

Nelson Ukpabi, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, said: “On 3rd October 2023, one Rev. Victor Okon of Christ Divine Liberation International Ministry, Adim, Biase Local Government Area of Cross River State petitioned the Assistant Inspector-General of Police Zone Six that one Ogban Emmanuel ‘ m ‘ 44 years and other Youths of Adim town set ablaze his church and his residential bungalow located in Adim town”.

Okpabi stated that the suspect on interrogation told the police that he was a town crier and was mandated to announce to the youths of the community that the church was preaching against their tradition and holding crusades during the community’s festivals and should be set ablaze and demolished”

He said the suspect is also alleged to have personally led the youths to the church and stole offering money and other money kept in the pastor’s house before setting the church and bungalow ablaze.

Effort, he said, is in top gear to apprehend other fleeing suspects.
