2 men arrested for gang-raping 12-year-old girl
THE Minna Chief Magistrate's Court One has ordered the remand of two middle-aged men in Correctional Custody, Minna for allegedly gang-raping a 12-year-old girl.
The two suspects, Umaru Hussaini and Zulkibilu Musa, reside in Sabon Gari area, Kagara, headquarters of Rafi Local Government Area, Niger State.
They were said to have lured the girl to the room of Zulkibilu Musa where they allegedly raped her one after the other.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Bello Beji, dragged the two suspects before the court on a two-count charge of joint acts and unlawful sexual intercourse with a child.
This, he said, contravenes Section 79 of the penal code law and Section 26 (2) of Niger State Child Rights Act 2021.”
The prosecutor also told the court that one Lawal Haruna of Sabon Gari area of Kagara in Niger State reported the case to Kagara Divisional Police headquarters that the two defendants lured his 12-year-old daughter to the room and gang raped her one after the other.
Inspector Bello said consequent on the report, detectives swung into action and effected the arrest of the two defendants.
Both defendants, according to him, have confessed to having committed the offence during Police preliminary investigations.
However, when the charges were read to them by the Chief Magistrate, Hajiya Ummulkhatum Mohammed, Umaru Hussaini admitted to have committed the crime while Zulkibilu Musa pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor then requested for the remand of the two defendants in correctional custody and adjournment of the case for the police to bring their witnesses to commence full trial into the case.
“Already, investigation into the case has been completed while the case file is also ready for full commencement of the case.
The Presiding Chief Magistrate, Hajiya Ummulkhatum Mohammed, therefore ordered their remand in Correctional Custody adding that the Court would also independently conduct a full trial of the case given the heinous nature of the crime against the innocent girl and adjourned
