Farmer killed over tubers of yam

A farmer simply identified as Mallam Ahmadu has been allegedly murdered following a disagreement over some harvested tubers of yams on his farm.

It was gathered that the incident occurred at Labaka Oja, Oke-Ode, in Ifelodun LGA of Kwara State, weekend, when the victim was called on the phone by one Ali, a Bororo, while about to have his dinner.

A community source told our correspondent, that the victim was called on the phone and went into the bush but never returned alive.

“When we continued the search the next day (Monday), we met his corpse at the same spot where we recovered his machine a day earlier badly macheted,” said the source.

Speaking on the issue, the traditional ruler of the town, Oba Kazeem Irewolede, who confirmed the incident, said the community had arrested the suspect adding that it was a disagreement about harvested yam that led to the farmer’s death.

According to the monarch,”the deceased, we discovered, once caught the suspect harvesting some yams in his farm, apprehended and collected money from him in the process, which led to their disagreement”.

He also said that the suspect had been handed over to the police at the Oke-Ode Police Division.

Contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the State police command, Ejire Adetoun Adeyemi, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent said that the suspect had confessed to the crime and would be prosecuted accordingly.
