Traders promise cleanliness, as Lagos govt reopens Alayabiagba market

Traders and market leaders at   the popular Alayabiagba International Mordern Market situated at  Boundary, Ajegunle Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Council of Lagos State, have pledged to ensure total cleanliness of the market.

It would be recalled that the market was shut by the state government for poor sanitation.

The traders, led by Babaloja General for Ajeromi markets, Alhaji Lateef Ibrahim Nda, expressed gratitude Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu  and Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, for reopening the market.

Nda, who also expressed gratitude to Prince Rabiu Oluwa and the Ajeromi/ Ifelodun federal lawmaker, Mr. Kalejaye Adeboye Paul, said the traders had collectively realised that the government was not victimising them with the closure but noted that it was for their benefit.

He said the leadership of the market constantly ensured cleanliness of its environment by embarking on constant environmental sanitation every Thursday to ensure that the market met the standard of other modern markets in the state.

Nda added that as part of self-effort, the market committee leadership employed cleaners and local security who they paid N160,000 monthly to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse around the market premises .

"We are jointly appreciating the governor and the commissioner for environment and water resources, Mr. Wahab Tokunbo, for opening the market after meeting up with their requirements.

"We have relocated the water bin to a better place and provide a good platform for it. We shall provide extra bins, and we have written undertaken to constantly ensure cleanliness. 

"Total cleanliness will, henceforth, be our priority. We are grateful to government because   we now realise the closure is to ensure we do the right thing and not to victimise us.’’

The Iyaloja-General for Ajeromi and Iyaloja for Alayabiagba, Alhaja Titilayo Agoro, and   Alhaja Jemilat Adeyemi, respectively, appreciate the commissioner for environment for personally coming to open the market.

"We are so happy that the commissioner personally came himself to reopen this market because so many mouths are feeding from this market, especially the widows. 

"We promise to ensure total cleanliness and promised to hand over any defaulter to authority,’’ the Iyaloja-General said.

Some of the traders, including Alhaji Fatai Aileru, chairman rubber shoe and slippers   sellers association, expressed delight over the reopening of the market.
