Pandemonium as fire guts Lagos airport

PANDEMONIUM broke out, yesterday, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos following an inferno with passengers and airline operators seen scampering for safety.

It was gathered that a smoke incident was reported at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, located in Ikeja, Lagos.

The source of the smoke was identified as originating from the basement of the Terminal building.

Confirming the fire incident,  a statement by the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua said: "Promptly responding to the situation, the dedicated firefighters from the Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services, ARFFS, of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport initiated immediate action. Their swift response and professional efforts have successfully brought the situation under control.

"By our unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of passengers, staff, and all airport users, the Terminal building was promptly evacuated due to the smoke that had permeated some areas of the facility.

"We are pleased to report that the situation is presently under control.

"FAAN remains committed to her core values of safety, security and comfort."

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
