12 arraigned for cultism, possession of firearms

AS a way of discouraging criminal activities, the police in Edo State have arraigned 12 men before a state criminal court on a 12 count charge of cultism, possession of firearms, terrorism, attempt to invade a community, among others.

In the charge between the Commissioner of Police, who is the complainant and the Emmanuel Ogu, Friday Edanwen, Iyayi Odenwingie, Osaro Okumose, Osagiede Kenneth, Adamu Babangida, Osaynde Osamwonyi, Uchenna Sunday, Osagie Erio, Chidi Nnamdi, Momoh Lawal and Favour Osasuyi aged between 23 and 38 years, who are the accused/defendants, the prosecuting counsel, P.  Ogwumba, said the offences against them were allegedly committed in Ikhueniro, a community in the outskirts of Benin City in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of the state.

Some of the charges include alleged membership of Aye confraternity, which he said was an unlawful society punishable under Section 412 and 44 (a)(b) of the Criminal Law of Edo State 2022.

The police also accused them of being in possession of firearms, including a Tata magnum pump gun, model 2003, Breach No 72/H21YT/269 with four live cartridges and nine expended cartridges an offence he said is punishable under Section 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (special provision) Act Cap R11, laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.

He added that the accused planned to attack the community as a result of the leadership tussle there among other charges.

They were arraigned before Justice Esohe Ikponmwonba, their plea was not taken and the case adjourned to July 11, 2023, while awaiting advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions, DPP.

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
