Transition: FG declares May 29, public holiday

THE Federal Government has declared Monday, 29th May 2023 as work-free for all workers in the country.

According to the federal government, the decision is to allow Nigerians commemorate the inauguration of the nation's 16th democratically elected President.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr Shuiab Belgore in a statement on Friday noted that the declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to the statement: "The Minister felicitates with all Nigerians on the momentous occasion, commending them for their faith in democracy as expressed in the nationwide election that produced the President and his Deputy being inaugurated and indeed in all elections across the nation.

"He enjoins them to continue to support and promote democracy through adherence to the rule of law and uphold all democratic institutions.''

"Democracy anywhere is an unfinished business and the only way it can keep developing and serve its end of being the vehicle to good governance and the welfare of all the people is by adhering to its tenets of rule of law, support for democratic institutions, promotion of free and responsible press and advancement of the frontiers of freedom for all the people", the statement added. 

Aregbesola urged Nigerians to continue to promote ideals of peaceful coexistence and love for neighbours, noting that they can only practice democracy and enjoy its dividends in a peaceful environment.

The Minister commended Nigerians for their strident efforts at achieving an unbroken civilian rule and successful change of governments since 1999.

Oyo school kidnap: We can’t risk more lives in rescue efforts — Soun

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
