A’Ibom: INEC declares YPP candidate, Ukpong-Udo, Rep member-elect


The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared, Mr. Emmanuel Ukpong-udo of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, as winner of the keenly contested Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency seat in Akwa Ibom State.

The Returning Officer for the Constituency, Patrick Aderorho, declared the result at the Constituency collation center on Friday 5th May 2023, in the presence of collation agents of political parties and stakeholders.

According to the INEC Returning Officer ,  Ukpong-udo, popularly called ‘Maccaire’,

polled   a total of 19, 926 votes to defeat the candidate of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr Glory Edet, who polled a total of 15,765 votes.

The Ikono/Ini federal constituency seat won by YPP has brought to three the number of House of Representatives seats the ruling party in the State lost to the opposition parties in the 2023 general polls.

  It will be recalled that the candidate of the All Progressives Congress(APC), won the Ikot Ekpene Federal constituency seat during the February 25, Presidential/ National Assembly elections.

Similarly during the April Supplementary poll, another APC candidate, Mr. Clement Jimbo s scored 22, 225 votes to defeat the serving member seeking a re-election, and candidate of the PDP, Mr Aniekan Umanah who scored 20, 793 votes.  

Recall that the Ikono/Ini federal constituency election was among the few elections cancelled by INEC following the violence that marred the   exercise on February 25th.

Interestingly, similar violence marred the   Supplementary elections of April 15th 2023, which was supposed to be held in 17 units, and which led to the delay in INEC declaring result for the seat after the election.

It could be recalled that a male corps member on   election duty was shot in the leg on that Supplementary election day, and was rushed to the hospital where he was treated.

Responding after he was declared winner, Emmanuel Ukpong-udo attributed his victory to the grace of God and to his constituents support and promised that he would continue to serve them and even better.

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
