Zamfara: How Mattawale became lone non-reelected governor

•Rescue mission has just begun, says Dauda, gov-elect 

AMONG the 10 first term governors, who sought re-election, Zamfara State Governor, Bello Mattawalle, is the only one whose mandate was not renewed.

Mattawalle contested the governorship election on the platform of the APC but lost the keenly contested poll to Dauda Lawal of the PDP.

Lawal polled 377,726 votes to beat Matawalle, who scored 311,976 votes.

Mattawale was elected on the platform of the PDP in 2019, but he defected to the APC recently amid complaints by PDP faithful in the North-West state.

Adamawa is the remaining state that has a first term governor, Umaru Fintiri, seeking a fresh mandate. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared the Adamawa governorship election as inconclusive. Fintiri was leading the APC flag bearer, Senator Aishatu Dahiri Binani, before the INEC paused announcement of results.

So far, eight re-elected governors are Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Babagana Zulum (Borno), Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq (Kwara), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe) and Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa).

Apart from Oluwaseyi Makinde, Bala Mohammed and Dauda Lawal, who are of the PDP, the other six belong to the APC.

Meanwhile,  Zamfara State Governor elect, Dauda Lawal has said that the mission to rescue the state from insecurity, poverty and others has begun.

In his acceptance speech after being declared governor-elect, Lawal promised to deliver on the yearnings and aspirations of Zamfara people in the areas of security, and poverty alleviation among others.

His words: “The change that the people of Zamfara voted for is a change from insecurity, a life of poverty, to a life of security, prosperity and comfort, accountability, and respect for the rule of law.

“Under my leadership, Zamfara State will be a reference point for new ideas, determination, dynamism, and endless possibilities.

‘I thank the people of Zamfara, especially those who believe in our cause and voted for me. It is your victory. I thank our royal fathers, clerics, civil servants, market women, men, and most especially our resilient and dynamic youths."

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.
