PDP guber candidate, escapes assassination

SPEAKER of the Delta State House of Assembly and Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate for March 18 election in the state, Sheriff Oborevwori, has escaped assassination by gunmen.

Oborevwori’s convoy was reportedly ambushed by the suspected assassins on the Warri/Sapele highway.               

Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Dennis Otu, in a statement, said Oborevwori was returning from Sapele to Osubi, when he was attacked by the gunmen. 

Otu said: “The convoy of Sheriff Oborevwori on March 12, 2023, came under heavy attack from gunmen between Elume junction and Okuabude in Okpe Local Government Area of the state. 

“The car, which he was driving in and security vehicles attached to the convoy were riddled with bullets in the incident, which occurred at 9.05p.m. 

“He had gone to Sapele for political meetings and on his way back to Osubi, the gunmen ambushed the convoy and launched an attack on him, spraying his car and back-up vehicles with bullets. 

“Only the grace of God and the fact that he was riding in a bullet proof car saved the life of Oborevwori.

“His  brave security men rose to the occasion by engaging the suspected assassins in a gun battle, which lasted for over 10 minutes before the gunmen took to their heels and disappeared. 

“Although no life was lost, one of the security men attached to the PDP governorship candidate sustained injury. The matter has been reported to the Police for further investigation.

“This is the second time suspected assassins have made an attempt on the life of Oborevwori. The first was on January 11, 2023, when assassins, who disguised as police officers opened fire on his convoy on the Warri/Sapele highway, while on his way to Koko, Warri North Local Government Area of the state for the commissioning of the ultra modern Ogheye floating market.”
