17 killed in auto crash

NO fewer than 17 persons have been killed in two separate crashes on Monday in Bauchi State, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corp, Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, has said. 

He said 17 others sustained injuries, pointing out that the crashes involved 35 people.

The FRSC chief said the first crash occurred at Manaba Village on Zaki-Gamawa Road in Bauchi State involving a Toyota Hummer bus which had 25 people in it and was driven by one Haruna Yusuf.

According to him, the lone fatal crash was caused by overloading, overspeeding and tyre burst.

He said: “There was a fatal crash at Manaba Village, along Zaki-Gamawa Road involving a commercial bus, a white Toyota Hummer bus, with registration number: KTG 13XF belonging to Himma Express.

“It occurred on March 13, 2023, about 10.30a.m. It was caused by overloading, overspeeding and tyre burst and it had 25 people inside. We were informed shortly afterwards and our men rushed to the scene within nine minutes for a rescue operation.

“As they got there, they rushed the victims to the General Hospital Gamawa by a Joint Task Force comprising Police, Army, Immigration Service and the Security and Civil Defence Corp who were on patrol at Bursali Ward in Zaki Local Government Area of the state for confirmation and treatment.

“It was at the hospital that a medical doctor confirmed 11 people, two male adults and nine female adults dead. Those who suffered injuries are 13 in number, comprising three male adults and 10 female adults.”

On the second crash, Abdullahi said that it occurred on March 14, 2023 about 5.21p.m., 10 kilometres from Yana town, along Yana-Giade Road in Shira LGA of the state.

He said the fatal crash involved two commercial vehicles, a Volkswagen Golf with number plate: SHR 203 AA driven by one Bappha Nasarawa and a Volkswagen Sharon bus, a political party vehicle with no number plate.

He noted that the crash was caused by overspeeding, adding that there were 10 adults, eight male adults and two female adults involved in the incident.

He said men of the Police Force, who arrived the scene, rushed the victims to the Ambara General Hospital where some died.

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration.
