Fire guts 6-storey building in Lagos market
A six-storey building on 43, Martins Street, at the popular Balogun market in Lagos went up in flames, yesterday, destroying goods for which monetary value could not be estimated.
The cause of the fire on the building comprising stores and warehouses for textiles materials could not be ascertained but Vanguard gathered that it started from the fourth floor and spread to the fifth and sixth floors before owners of the goods, who rushed from their respective homes could salvage their goods.
Officials of the Lagos State Fire Service, who arrived on the scene, battled to contain the fire from spreading to other highrise buildings close by.
At about 6 pm, a mop-up exercise was being carried out by the fire service officials who were later joined by other emergency responders.
Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Magret, said no casualty was recorded.
She explained that “ The fire incident was reported at 11.40 am. On arrival, we had to deplore the area ladder platform fire hitch to get access to the topmost floor of the building because it was also sandwiched by other highrise buildings.
“ The ground and first floors were used as shops while the rest floors served as warehouses.
. It would have been worse if it had spread to other buildings but we were able to curtail the spread.
Investigation into its cause is ongoing.
The fire has been put out. Mop-up exercise is ongoing.
For now, we can’t ascertain its cause. As soon as we are done with our exercise we will commence an investigation.”
