Apata schl student wins iPad in spelling Bee competition

A student of Apata Memorial High School, Olalekan Toyosin, who came first in the Spelling Bee Competition has won a brand new iPad at the end of the competition.

The competition was organised by Rotary Club of Platinum Minds in conjunction with Rotary club Canal Estate.

The Spelling Bee Competition, in the words of the Imaginative President of Rotary Club of Platinum Minds, Adu Victoria Omolara, is meant to improve the education and literacy of students in secondary schools.

According to her, “this spelling bee competition this year is something we want to be doing annually. It is actually for helping the students in accordance with our area of focus; Basic education and literacy.

“So it is to help the students in learning more advanced words. It also helps them to have the confidence to go out and also go for competition..”

The president-elect and current youth Chair, Gbolarun Akerele, added that the Rotary Club spelling competition is a way of preparing students to become future leaders. 

The guest speaker, Rotarian Maureen Osorunba spoke about drugs and the effects of drug abuse. Osorunba elaborated on the topic and advised the students not to indulge in drugs to avoid health issues and future complications.

In an opening remark, the imaginative president of the Rotary Club of Canal Estate, Rotarian Yusuf Olayinka said: “I want to encourage all the participants to put in their best. I also want to say that this will not be the last. We will want to make it a yearly thing and hopefully, by the next two-three years, we are going to have more participants.

Only three schools were present at the event. They were Okota Junior High School, Apata Memorial High School, and Ajumoni Junior Grammer School, while 15 students comprising seven  boys and eight girls were  present.  

Six contestants participated in the Spelling Bee competition. They are Ubah Christabel from Apata Memorial High School, John Goodness Ozioma and Agboola Olamidotun Shalom from Okota Junior High School, Ugboko Daniel, and Salaudeen Aliya from Ajumoni Junior Grammer School. 

At the end of the competition, Olalekan Toyosin came first in the competition and was given an iPad as Prize, Ubah Christabel from Apata Memorial High School came second and John Goodness Ozioma from Okota Junior High School came third.

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
