Bank robbery: Young graduate, two others killed
Three people, including a young woman who had just graduated, were reportedly killed by gunmen who assaulted commercial banks in Ankpa, the administrative center of the Ankpa council area of Kogi State, on Tuesday night.
According to reports, the thieves entered the town by the eastern flank in three vehicles, some of which were motorbikes. They then blocked all exits and carried out their crime unhindered for nearly three hours.
According to a witness, the bandits opened fire heavily on the local police station before moving on to the First and Zenith banks.
“After roughly an hour of robbing the banks, they drove erratically through the town while intermittently firing shots.
They traveled through the Okpo Olamaboro Local Government Area after leaving Ankpa, but nobody knew where they were going, as the shots were too much for the police to curtail”.
Residents reportedly fled for safety after one of the victims was struck by a stray bullet.
However, according to SP. William Anya, the state’s public relations officer, the Police were able to engage the robbers in a gun duel because the majority of the bandits fled with gunshot wounds.
The police officers on duty at the station and the banks quickly recovered from the sudden attack and gallantly repelled the attackers, who were forced to flee, some into nearby bushes, and others with their vehicles. This was the result of the simultaneous robbery attacks on UBA, FirstBank, and Zenith Bank, Ankpa.
In their haste to flee, the robbers left three of the operation’s vehicles behind.
