*10 escape death as truck rams into hotel

Six persons lost their lives, Monday, in an auto accident in Kaugama Local Government Area of Jigawa State, while many escaped death as a truck rammed into a hotel in Abia State.

Confirming the death of the six persons in Jigawa State, yesterday, Police command’s spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu, said three other persons sustained injuries in the accident which occurred at about 11:20 p.m. along Hadejia-Kano road on Monday.

He said: “On June 26, at about 11:20 p.m., information on our disposal revealed that there was a fatal motor accident along Hadejia-Kano road.

“The accident involved Lexus car with number plate: AAA 153 EA, driven by one Habib Habib, aged 30 years of Yalleman quarters in Kaugama LGA,”

Shiisu alleged that the driver, who was carrying eight passengers, lost control as a result of which the vehicle somersaulted.

The spokesman said upon receipt of the report, police personnel rushed to the scene and evacuated the victims to General Hospital, Hadejia,

He said that three others, who sustained injuries, were responding to treatment while the corpses had been released to their relatives for burial.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Mr Aliyu Tafida, condoled with families of the deceased and urged motorists to avoid overloading, night journey and reckless driving.

10  escape death as truck rams into Abia hotel

Meanwhile, no fewer than 10 persons reportedly escaped death in Umuahia, Abia State, as a truck rammed into a hotel damaging the fence and a bus parked beside the hotel.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the truck was descending the East Street, along the Waterside area when the driver lost control and broke into the hotel.

However, no life was lost as the trailer was held by the wreckage of the fence and a bus it damaged.

One shot dead, Police station, cars destroyed in Ogulagha community

One person was reportedly shot dead, yesterday, by military men around the Focardos terminal in the oil-rich Ogulagha community, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

It was gathered that the Police post in the area, houses and vehicles were destroyed by some rampaging youths in the community, protesting the death.

Operation Delta Safe at the 3 Battalion in Warri could not be reached for comment at press time.

Chairman of the community, John Bebapere, said that one account of what happened had it that about six youths from the community allegedly went close to an oil facility in the area at night to pick scrap items when they were accosted by military personnel guarding the area, adding that one of the youths that ran was shot.

“I was called around 1 am by my Public Relations Officer and my Vice-Chairman that six of our community boys went to take some scraps around Agip pipeline area guarded by military men. The security men saw them, one ran and was shot. The military men took all of them to a cottage hospital. The one that was shot did not survive. The corpse and the others were brought to the community.

“When they were questioned at one point they said they went to pick snails in the area that night. There has been a mix-up in their stories. The friends of the one that died and others became riotous over the death.

“Two of my cars, I was told have been destroyed. I am not in town. They also destroyed the Police station in the area and our beach. These are what I have been told.

“I called the Burutu council chairman, who later got across to the Police that went to the area. Calm has returned to the community and the remains of the young man killed have been buried."
