4 died, 14 injured in Lagos-Ibadan expressway auto crash

NO fewer than four persons lost their lives, while 14 others sustained injuries in an accident involving a Mazda bus and a truck at Lufwape on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, on Sunday, December 19, 2021.

Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, in Ogun State, Mr. Ahmed Umar, confirmed the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta.

Umar said the incident occurred at 3:40p.m. and was caused by the driver of the truck, adding that the accident was as a result of excessive speed and dangerous driving on the part of the truck driver.

He said 20 people were involved in the accident, comprising 12 males and eight females, adding that eight males and six females sustained injuries while two males and two females died in the accident.

“The truck driver drove dangerously, which made the Mazda bus to lose control due to speed and crashed on the highway.  But unfortunately the truck escaped,” he said.

He said the injured victims were taken to Idera Hospital, Sagamu while the deceased were deposited at the same hospital mortuary. 

Umar cautioned motorists on dangerous driving as life has no duplicate. He advised the motoring public to drive defensively, maintain safe speed and obey traffic rules and regulations.

The sector commander commiserated with the families of the crash victims and enjoined them to contact FRSC Mowe division for more information about the crash.

NDLEA nabs pregnant woman with 1,441kg imported skunk in Lagos

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have raided two clandestine drug stores in Lagos, where a pregnant woman, Joy Chioma, was arrested with 1,442 kilograms of imported skunk while four men, including a 62-year-old Basset Emmanuel were arrested with 182,000 tablets of Tramadol.

The 27-year-old Chioma was arrested December 17, 2021  when operatives raided her store and home in Ojo area of Lagos while another suspect, Michael Oroke, was also nabbed with 29kg of the illicit drug in the same location.

The previous day, December 16, 2021,  operatives had equally raided a hideout in Abule-Egba area of the state where Basset Emmanuel, Ezekwem Lawrence, Mohammed Aliyu, and Suwidi Isiaku were arrested with 182,000 tablets of Tramadol 225mg.

In similar raids across eight other states of Rivers, Kogi, Benue, Adamawa, Anambra, Edo, Ekiti and Ondo, over 4,000 kilograms of assorted illicit drugs were seized.

Couple sells one-month-old baby for N50,000

Men of Ogun State Command of Nigeria Police have arrested a couple for selling their one-month-old baby for N50,000.

The couple, Eze Onyebuchi and his wife, Oluchi, according to a statement by the command image maker, reside at Ilara area of Ode Remo, in Remo North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Oyeyemi said: “The suspects were arrested on December 16, 2021, following information received by policemen at Ode Remo divisional headquarters, that the couple willingly sold their one-month-old baby to a woman, who is now at large.

“Upon the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Ode Remo division, Olayemi Fagbohun, detailed his detectives to the area where the couple were arrested and brought to the station. 

“On interrogation, the suspects explained to the police that, it was Mrs. Ruth Obajimi, who directed the yet-to-be identified buyer to them. 

“They stated further that the woman came to them on December 14, 2021, and told them that she was from human rights office, and that she will help them to foster their child. The woman then gave them N50,000 and they handed over the baby to her despite not knowing her from Adam.”

Oyeyemi added that effort was on top gear to apprehend the woman with the view to recover the baby. 

Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspects to Anti Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation. 

He also directed a massive manhunt for the buyer who is on the run.
