Yoruba Nation: Lagos rally'll be peaceful, Sunday Igboho assures

• Says he lacks power to fight FG

• Why Police must provide security — Adebanjo

AHEAD of the proposed Saturday's self-determination rally in Lagos, Yoruba freedom fighter, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, yesterday, assured that the rally would be peaceful, adding that he lacks the power to fight the Federal Government and political leaders.

Adeyemo, in a viral video, said that the rally would hold against all odds.

He alluded to similar rallies that took place in Ogun, Oyo, Ondo, and Osun states, saying the Lagos rally would be as peaceful as witnessed in other South Western states.

His words: “I don’t have the power to fight the Federal Government. I can’t fight an ordinary local government chairman. But the battle is the Lord’s. God who is the head of the battle will fight for us. Our generation will emancipate the Yoruba race from slavery.”

Going more spiritual, he painted the picture of the sojourn of Israelites in Egypt, noting that it was God who freed them from the claws of Egyptians, and that same God would fight for the Yoruba.

“How many can I do? Sunday Igboho is not the only powerful person. There are many powerful persons everywhere, unless we want to deceive ourselves. I can’t do it all alone. We must all unite. But, someone must lead first. Moses was chosen to liberate the Israelites before others joined him. God will fight for us.”

“To all Yorubas, I say come out on July 3 for the peaceful rally. We should not fight. We only want to tell Buhari that all we want is the Yoruba Nation. Nobody should threaten us with death. You cannot kill us. There is no live champion, but current champion.”

On the funding of the persistent calls for separation of Yoruba from Nigeria, he said, “Those abroad are the ones contributing the money we use in buying vehicles and do other things.”

Why Police must provide security —Adebanjo

Also speaking, the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political orgnisation, Afenifere, Pa Ayo Adebanjo insisted that the Police must provide security for organizers of the rally to prevent hoodlums from hijacking the rally.

Adebanjo said: “If the Federal Government is serious about keeping the country safe, it should restructure the country and there will be peace.

Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

“I can’t predict this government. They are going to hold a peaceful rally and what I expect the Commissioner of Police in Lagos to do is to give them protection. They have held rallies in other south-west states. What the police should do is to give them protection. If they should arrest them, the Police will be infringing on their fundamental rights. They have to protest, they have a right but if the police do not give them protection, then hoodlums may attack them which may lead to reprisal.

“If hoodlums attack them, they will resist and that may cause the government to go after them saying they are causing  riot. The Police must give them protection because if it does not, it means the government wants a riot and they will be privy to it. The people want to hold a peaceful protest because it is their right.”
