Some suspected killers of a 58-year-old woman, who was allegedly murdered by four suspects with the assistance of her house-help in Calabar, were yesterday paraded alongside 28 others suspected criminals by the Cross River State Police Command.

It was gathered that before the victim, Mrs Doris Andy Inyang, was killed,  she was raped by the teenage gang at her residence in State Housing Estate, Calabar.

The gang members also reportedly carted away household items and a 2016 Sentra Nissan car after the crime.

But speaking with pressmen during the parade, the suspects, 18-year-old Godwin Nyenime and 19-year-old Eteng Omini denied killing their victim, adding that they only went for her car without any knowledge of her death.

Omini said: "I was not involved in her killing. I was promised, N500,000 by her house-help, Udobong, who is my friend.

“He told me to come and drive the lady’s car that he would pay me N500,000 I was not involved in the rape and her death. If I knew someone was killed in the deal, I wouldn’t have been involved at all. I regret my involvement in the deal.

“I never knew he was an armed robber because he is someone that we used to play ball together in the street around Bogobiri and Nelson Mandela Street. I regret my action because I have a mother and a younger one.”

Briefing journalists earlier at the Police Command Headquarters, the state Commissioner of Police, Sikiru Akande, said the command has recovered the Nissan Sentra 2016 car from the suspects, adding that two other cars were recovered including one black Prado SUV, one white Mercedes Benz 350

Akande called for total commitment and partnership from all stakeholders and general public for an outright boost of the internal security architecture to curb criminality at all cost.

Undergraduate, boyfriend nabbed for selling drugged cookies to school children, others

A 300-level university student, Rhoda Agboje, has been arrested by operatives of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, for allegedly selling cookies laced with a drug to secondary school students and unsuspecting members of the public in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

Arrested alongside the undergraduate was her boyfriend, Ifeayin Nwankwo, while the anti-narcotic agency operatives are still on the trail of other members of the syndicate.

The syndicate, as gathered, produced the cookies with a highly psychoactive variant of cannabis known as Arizona, in addition to alcohol and Rohypnol, among other ingredients.

Their lid, according to the NDLEA Director, Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, was blown open following the arrest of Rhoda Agboje with four pieces of the drugged cookies on April 18, 2021.

He said: “She was arrested at the NNPC Cooperative Estate, opposite Gaduwa Estate in Abuja, based on a complaint that she gave an unsuspecting young girl the cookies to eat. After eating the drugged cookies, the girl lost her mind and could not sleep, making incoherent utterances due to the effects of the cookies.

“Under interrogation, the prime suspect, Rhoda, confessed she prepares the cookies with a friend and sells each pack of three pieces at N1,500. A follow-up operation in her boyfriend’s house led to the recovery of over 200 pieces of the drugged cookies.”

On his part, the Commander, FCT Command of the NDLEA, Mohammed Sokoto, said: “Her boyfriend, Ifeanyi Nwankwo, and all the equipment used for the production of the cookies were brought to the office for further investigation.

"The suspect confirmed that she sells at parties and to unsuspecting members of the public, including school children that are the most vulnerable. The suspect also supplied to some supermarkets and clubs in the FCT.”
