Tackle insecurity, bad economy — FCMN tells Buhari

FELLOWSHIP of Christian Ministers in Nigeria, FCMN, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to tackle the problem of insecurity and bad economy plaguing the country and impoverishing the citizens.

The ministers made the call at their 2021 one-day fasting and prayer, held at The New Apostolic Church, Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

According to the president of the body, Reverend Isaac Olayemi Ogunniran: “I want to, on behalf of this fellowship, to address the major issues affecting the nation adversely and we are appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to make further frantic efforts to find solution to all those problems.

“It will be a total understatement to say that the nation’s security is too porous. The issue of kidnapping, killings, maiming and many other criminalities are the order of the day. It is not unheard of these days that a person who left home in the morning may not return. No one is safe, even our security agents. Everyone today is a suspect since you cannot determine the person you are journeying with, no section is spared or safe on this issue.”

The minister lamented the bad condition of the country’s economy and called for urgent attention of the authority concerned to address the suffering of the citizens. He said: “We, as a nation, talented and blessed by God, are suffering so much. The days of suffering and smilling are completely gone.

“All avenues at reviving the economy have been jeopardised by cattle herders, whose cows have destroyed our farms, and this has led to frequent face-off between herders and farmers. We are suffering, inspite of being blessed with abundant mineral resources. Whatever is left are being destroyed by cattle and insecurity.”

Ogunniran, who lamented over the increasing unemployment rate in the country, which is the pivot of crimes and criminality, appealed to the governments both at federal, state and local levels to address the situation urgently, saying that a hungry man is an angry man.

Seeking peace for the country, the cleric said: “We call on all those fomenting trouble to please bury their hatchets and let us join hands to make Nigeria great again. We need to understand that a kingdom divided against itself cannot stand.

“We all know where we are partakers in the mischief of this nation which we can honestly address to make this nation better. I, on behalf of the FCMN enjoin all of us to please play our parts faithfully as it will enhance and facilitate the revamping and stability of Nigeria.

Speaking on the way out of the country’s quagmire, the minister said: “We are sure that prayer works wonders, as we can only conquer by our kneels. Hence, we call on all religious leaders and members to pray assiduously and earnestly for the revival of Nigeria.

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach. We call on those in the position of authority to be fair and honest in discharging their duties. Including those in lower cadre.

"Infact, we should all display honesty which is the best policy in all our endeavours.”

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
