LASG closes schools, as anti-SARS protest worsens

Due to endSARS protest worsening nationwide, Lagos State Government has ordered the closure of public and private schools in the state indefinitely. The government has directed all students in public and private schools to stay at home.

The closure was announced by Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folashade Adefisayo, in a press statement issued on her behalf by Head of Public Affairs, Ministry of Education, Kayode Abayomi, yesterday to all media houses.

According to the press statement: “The Lagos State Government has directed all pupils and students in public and private schools to stay at home following the tension generated by the anti-SARS protests.

“A new date of resumption for all classes will be announced as soon as possible.”

Adefisayo added that “the safety of the pupils, students, parents and all staff working in schools is paramount at this critical period”.

She urged parents to “keep an eye on their wards and not allow them to be used as willing tools in the hands of those who might want to hijack the protests to unleash mayhem on the society”.

The Commissioner also encouraged schools to “utilise other means of distance teaching and learning i.e radio, television and online media as they have been doing during and post the recent COVID-19 lockdown”.

It would be recalled that schools in the state and nationwide were previously closed to curb the spread of coronavirus in the state.

It was gathered that many pupils, students and teachers encountered difficulty in getting to schools in the state yesterday, as some of them trekked long distances to go to schools. Even some travellers, workers and business men and women were stranded at the bus-stops. 

This is as #EndSARS protesters mounted roadblocks in some strategic locations in the state, such as Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Airport Road, Agidingbe, Ketu, Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Iyana-Ipaja, Lekki-Toll gate etc in a bid to express their displeasure.

There was also violence in the Yaba area of the state when some hoodlums attacked operatives of the Rapid Response Squad.

Easter: FG declares Friday, Monday public holidays

THE Federal Government has declared Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebration. The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government through  a statement by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani.  The minister, who congratulated all Christians in Nigeria and in the diaspora on the joyous occasion of Easter, urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of selflessness, forgiveness, forbearance and love as exemplified by the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  He reiterated that the goal of the government remained taking decisions that would bring about national rebirth, economic growth and shared prosperity.
