FOLLOWING a spike in the confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country, the Lagos State Government, yesterday, reiterated the need for residents to strictly adhere to standard safety protocols to mitigate infection of the virus in Lagos, which is the epicentre state.
This came as the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, tested positive for COVID-19.
The Chairman, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr. Adebayo Aderiye, said the need to fully comply was aimed at curbing the virus.
Aderiye made the call, while commissioning the biomedical equipment donated by the National Lottery Trust Fund to the Onikan Health Centre, Lagos Island.
The chairman said: “Despite the number of COVID-19 cases across the state it does not in any way indicate that we should let down our guard. Except an effective vaccine has been developed in curbing its spread like small-pox, flu, and polio, it is still a deadly disease.
“We must also accept that it has come to stay, hence, we must do everything possible to protect ourselves from the terrible pandemic.”

He said: “With utmost sense of responsibility, I am obliged to make it known to the general public that I have tested positive to COVID-19. Consequently, I have proceeded on a 14 days self- isolation and treatment at home.
“Nevertheless, I remain committed to discharge my duties as the Commissioner for Health and Deputy Incident Commander for COVID-19 responses in Lagos State. I am extremely enthusiastic and hopeful of overcoming this phase of our collective fight against COVID-19.
“I have the full support of the Incident Commander and Governor of Lagos State, Jide Sanwo-Olu, the entire cabinet of the government of Lagos State as well as my team, the Lagos State Ministry of Health to put this behind as soon as possible.
“I wish to, however, assure you all that my family members and I are fine and are responding positively to treatment. Let’s us continue to mask up and maintain physical distancing as well as other established protocols for COVID-19 prevention as appropriate.”
