Panic as Lassa Fever spreads to many states
...death toll increases

By Joseph Temidayo

Don’t eat rat, don’t touch rat, don’t eat any food touched by rat, store food in sealed containers and wash hands with soap after visiting toilet, shaking hands before eating. These warnings came from the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu to the public, to reduce the menace of Lassa Fever.
According to him, the deadly disease is caused by contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces.
Since the disease returned January this year, over 200 victims have died, among the over 1,700 affected by the virus, including health workers. That was the reason, Ihekweazu is warning public to avoid contact with rats and keep their food covered from rats.  Ihekweazu in his statement disclosed that many Lassa Fever cases were confirmed in Edo, Ondo, Bauchi, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Anambra, Benue, Kogi, Imo, Plateau, Lagos, Taraba, Delta, Osun, Rivers, FCT, Gombe and Ekiti with many deaths recorded.
He urged the public to be having periodic medical check-up and avoid contact with infected rats, sick and dead animals.
“Always wash hands with soap and water after shaking hands with other fellow human beings, and after contact with animals or when caring for sick-relatives or soiled beddings.”
“Every fever must be investigated properly and treated appropriately. No one should treat malaria without diagnosis. Until we make our environment clean, and keep our food safe from the contacts of rodents; this disease will continue killing people.
“If we see refuse in front of our houses, gutters and streets, we should clear them because those heaps of refuse will attract rats that are causing death”, he warned.
According to the medical experts: “Lassa virus lives in rats and infects people that come in contact with infected rats’ urine, faeces, saliva. Also, it affects people that ingest food and drinks contaminated with infected rats. “Also catching and preparing infected rats as food, as well as inhaling tiny particles in the air contaminated with infected rat and faeces; and direct contact with infected person’s blood or body fluids make one become victim of Lassa Fever.
