WHITE Sand Market traders in Lagos Mainland Local Government Area of Lagos State have protested to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to save them from council chairperson, who they accused of trying to take over the market. The traders, led by Sherifat Thanni, said the call became necessary following continuous threats and abuse of court orders by the Mainland Chairman council chairperson, Mrs. Omolola Essien. But when contacted by Vanguard, Mrs Essien, said the matter was in court, hence she would not want to comment on it. Thanni said on January 12, 2024, Justice Akinkunmi Idowu, the trial judge in suit LD/7078GCM/23, before a Lagos State High Court, directed the traders to meet with the council chairman for discussion on an amicable settlement. AN unspecified number of students of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, were injured on Tuesday while rushing to enter examination halls to write the General Studies (GST) examination for the first semester in the 2023/2024 academic session. The stampede resulted from attempts by students to enter the halls that were not big enough to accommodate all of them at the same time. It was gathered that some students arrived on the campus as early as 7am, but were not called to write their papers until 6 pm, leading to the students struggling to gain entry by all means. The injured students were rushed to the university clinic. THE Ogun State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has confirmed that no fewer than five persons, yesterday, lost their lives, while 10 others sustained injuries in a fatal accident involving two trucks and a bus at NASFAT, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The accident said to have occurred about 9:56a.m., involved a Daf truck with number plate KUT561ZZ, a Toyota Hiace bus with number plate, GGE84YF, and another truck without a number plate. Spokesperson for Ogun State Sector Command of FRSC, Florence Okpe, in a statement, yesterday,  said a total of 15 people were involved in the accident, comprising 11 male and four female adults. Okpe attributed the fatal crash to reckless driving on the part of one of the truck drivers, who made a sudden U-turn without trafficating, thereby causing the truck behind it and another bus to lose control and rammed into each other. It also explained that the job of using NIN to track kidnappers currently terrorising the country is that of the police. NCC spokesman, Reuben Muoka, who gave the explanation in an interview on Channels Television breakfast programme, The Morning Brief, said: “People who probably didn’t get a cleared or verified NIN” had been barred because “the earlier ones they submitted was not good.” He said some SIM cards had verification and identification issues, such as disparity in information, including names and other data. “There are still some subscribers whose NINs are yet to be verified by the National Identity Management Commission, NIMC, and those have to also be corrected,” Muoka said.
