...advance to the round 16 of 2022 World Cup By Emmanuel Oluwatimilehin SENEGAL became the first African country to qualify for the round of 16 knockout stage of the ongoing 2022 World Cup after defeating Ecuador 2-1 on Tuesday at the Khalifa International Stadium in Qatar. Senegal took the lead with a penalty from Ismaila Sarr in the 44th minute, and Kalidou Koulibaly sealed the game with a beautiful finish in the 70th. Ecuador would have advanced if they had won or drawn. Senegal, on the other hand, ensured that Ecuador received no points from the game and advanced with a win. Aliou Cissé, Senegal's coach, became the country's first manager to win the Africa Cup of Nations in February. He is also the first Senegalese manager to reach the World Cup round of 16, since Bruno Metsu did that in 2002. Cissé was Senegal's captain in 2002, when the Lions qualified for their first World Cup quarter-final. Senegal finished second in Group A with six points, behind Netherlands with...

Students arrested for rapping JSS student

THREE Senior Secondary School students have been arrested by police detectives in Ondo State for allegedly gang-raping a junior female student within the school premises. Police sources said the suspects lured a 14-year-old student into the bush at the back of the school gate and gang-raped her last Thursday. It was gathered that one of the suspects had earlier requested a relationship with the victim, which was turned down. “The boys monitored and ambushed the female student at the lonely place within the school during the break period.  “The victim went into a nearby bush in the school to defecate and on her way back, one of the boys noticed her and invited his two friends to join him in the ungodly act, which took place in an isolated place within the school premises. “The three boys thereafter waylaid and raped her in turn. It was gathered that the girl’s classmates, who saw her blood-stained uniform in the classroom raised the alarm. “The school authorities were informed of th...

Cheering Osun State workers receive Governor Ademola Adeleke at the state secretariat, Osogbo.  Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, had a busy first 24 hours in office yesterday. He dethroned three monarchs recently enthroned by his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola; suspended the chairman and members of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSIEC; and sacked 12,000 workers previously employed by Oyetola via executive orders. The new governor also clashed with state legislators over the legality of his executive orders over laws passed by the House, even as hoodlums wreaked havoc in Osogbo, attacking motor parks, forcing Governor Adeleke to issue a public warning against violence. Dethroned monarchs Few weeks to the end of his tenure, Oyetola appointed several monarchs, including the Akirun of Ikirun, Oba Yinusa Akadiri; Aree of Iree, Oba Ademola Oluponle; and Owa of Igbajo, Oba Adegboyega Famodun. The former governor also approved the appointment of 30 permanent secreta...

Commuters groan as fuel scarcity worsens traffic

Image
COMMUTERS were stranded in most parts of Lagos and its environs yesterday as the petrol scarcity, which resurfaced last weekend, exacerbated traffic. As a result, commercial vehicle drivers, whose turnaround time was drastically reduced by traffic jams, avoided most of the congested roads, particularly on the Badagry axis, Lekki, and Ikeja, among others. The large number of commuters stranded at bus stops resulted in a sharp increase in fares, as the few commercial drivers who braved the traffic raised fares by up to 50%. For example, the fare from Agbara to Mile 2 was raised from N500 to N700, and the fare from Badagry to Mile 2 was raised from N500 to N700. For example, the fare from Agbara to Mile 2 was raised from N500 to N700, while the fare from Badagry to Mile 2 was raised from N800 to N1,200 per trip. Similarly, the fare from Ajah on the Lagos-Epe Expressway to CMS increased dramatically from N500 to between N800 and N1,000 per trip, depending on bus size. Some stranded commut...

Wrong position on LG autonomy

Image
By Adekunle Adekoya I WAS thrown off my feet earlier in the week when a former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General in Oyo State, Mutalubi  Adebayo, faulted the clamour for local government autonomy by many sections of the Nigerian polity, adding that it simply shows that the people do not understand the concept of federalism. Adebayo spoke while answering questions on a live radio programme monitored in Ibadan. Indeed, the lawyer averred that in Nigeria, local governments were not designed to function the way many Nigerians wanted them to. Let me quote him: "Federal or national government is the making of the component states or units in the federation that agreed to come together to form a government at the centre. There are just two tiers of government in any federalism, and they are just the national, central, or federal government that they (all the component units or states) agree to create or form, and the state governments. "Local governments are not a tier o...
