Why I dumped PDP for APC — Shekarau

 Ibrahim Shekarau

FORMER Kano State Governor and Senator, Ibrahim Shekarau, has stated that he left the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to join the All Progressives Congress, APC, citing dissatisfaction with the PDP’s internal strife.

Shekarau disclosed the decision while addressing supporters at his Mundubawa residence in Kano, where he explained that the move followed careful consideration of several political options.

“We took the decision after wide deliberations and weighing several options, including joining the APC after realising that the PDP is facing so many challenges,” he said.

He dismissed the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as an alternative, describing it as a party driven by personal interests and still struggling to establish itself.

“We cannot align with ADC, a party filled with people of personal interests and struggling to gain its feet,” he added. The former governor urged his supporters to formally resign their membership of the PDP at the ward level and proceed to APC offices for registration ahead of deadlines. He is also expected to lead his supporters to his Giginyu ward in Nassarawa Local Government Area for official registration at a date to be announced.

The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, had earlier visited Kano on April 8 to persuade Shekarau to return to the party and support its efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.Reacting to the development, Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, welcomed Shekarau back to the APC, describing his return as a major boost to the party’s strength in the state.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Yusuf said a formal reception date would be fixed in consultation with the APC national secretariat. He added that the party in Kano was gaining increasing support and remained confident of electoral success, citing unity and strategic alignment as key strengths.Yusuf also assured party members of efforts to strengthen internal cohesion and expand grassroots mobilisation  across the state ahead of future elections.

The governor called on supporters to remain committed and continue mobilising for the party as political preparations intensify.
