Poor power supply: Consumers file 700,272 complaints

Electricity consumers lodged 700,272 complaints against power sector operators in 2025, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed.

The figure represents a 40.8 per cent decline from the 1,183,198 complaints recorded in 2024.

Data released by the commission for the four quarters of 2025 indicate that customers' grievances were largely driven by issues such as metering, poor power supply and illegal disconnections, among others. Port Harcourt DisCo recorded the highest number of complaints at 140,320, followed by Ibadan DisCo with 126,082 and Kano DisCo with 100,566.

A quarterly breakdown shows that complaints stood at 254,404 in the first quarter, dropped to 227,267 in the second quarter, declined further to 159,623 in the third quarter, and fell sharply to 58,978 in the fourth quarter.

Poor power supply persists

Despite the decline in complaints, power supply challenges persist. Checks by Vanguard showed that load allocation to the 11 distribution companies stood at just 3,398 megawatts as of 5 p.m., serving over 11 million electricity customers nationwide.

Analysis of data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator indicated that Abuja DisCo received 588MW, Ikeja Electric 581MW, and Eko DisCo 496MW.

Meanwhile, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared force majeure on the Ikeja West–Osogbo 330kV transmission line following a severe rainstorm on Thursday, April 16, 2026. TCN said the line tripped during the storm due to a fault detected approximately 14.9 kilometres from the Ikeja West (Ayobo) end of the line.

“Further inspection by TCN maintenance crews revealed that Tower No. 515 collapsed during the storm, with the structure giving way at its midsection. While TCN is mobilising materials and personnel for the re-erection of the fallen tower, efforts are ongoing by its engineers to dismantle the affected tower."

“We assure that we will work assiduously to restore flexibility and redundancy in that corridor, as an alternative line is still in service evacuating bulk power. Updates will be provided as work progresses,” the statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, said.
