THE remains of Afenifere Publicity Secretary, Comrade Peter Oluyinka Odumakin, would be laid to rest on Saturday, April 24.
According to the wife of the activist, Dr. Josephine Okei-Odumakin, “The rites will span three days, starting from Thursday, April 22, Friday 23 and Saturday, April, 24. There would be a day of tributes and Service of Songs at the Police College, Ikeja, Lagos, between 11am and 4pm, while his body lies in state on Thursday, April, 22.
“On Friday 23, his body departs Lagos for Moro, his country home, in Ife North local government area of Osun State.
“There will be a Christian wake-keep by 5pm at the Origbo Anglican Grammar School, Moro, which will be followed by a Candlelight Procession.”
Okei-Odumakin disclosed that “there would be Lying in State at Origbo Anglican Grammar School, Moro, by 8am on April 24.
This would be followed by a funeral service by 10am, after which his remains will be committed to Mother Earth at a private interment.”
Death: Yinka Odumakin died on Friday night April 2, 2021 at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital from respiratory issues due to complications resulting from Coronavirus.
Early life and education: Odumakin attended St. Augustine Primary School, Ondo State, for his elementary education.
He proceeded to CAC Grammar School, Edunabon, Osun State and Oduduwa College, Ile-Ife, Osun State. He graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Studies
Career: Odumakin played a key role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that fought the government of General Sani Abacha after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 Nigerian presidential election. He was among the spokespersons of the Southern and Middle Belt Leader's Forum (SMBLF). He was the spokesman of Muhammadu Buhari when he contested the 2011 Nigerian presidential election under the defunct Congress for Progressive Change. In 2014, during the government of Goodluck Jonathan, Odumakin and his wife were the only married couple among the 492-member 2014 National Conference which was held in Abuja, Nigeria. He was also a known critic of Muhammadu Buhari's government.
Personal life: Odumakin was from Moro, Ife North, Osun State, Nigeria. During the government of Sani Abacha, he met his wife Joe Okei-Odumakin at a detention facility in Alagbon, after she was transferred from Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, due to her involvement in pro-democracy campaigns. They married on 4 November 1997.
