FORMER leader of the House in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area Constituency 1, Dr. Ismaila Sule Olatunji has called on the public to know their genotype before marriage.
He said it is very important to do a blood test and know their Genotype (Sickle cell) status before marriage to avoid having wrong and incompatible partners.
Olatunji declared this in an interview with Harbinger magazine recently. He said that for the past 15 years he has been providing free medical services through free Genotype (sickle cell status) test for secondary school students in Nigeria.
According to him, “We are giving them orientation on the reason they should know their genotype before marriage, is to avoid giving birth to sickle cell children.
“For example, AS and AS are not advised to marry, there is every chance of having a child with SS. Likewise, AS and SS shouldn’t think of marrying. Also, SS and SS must not marry since there is no chance of escaping having children with sickle cell disease.
“It would be easier to reach more students in secondary schools, including religious houses and marketplaces, if the government could give them financial support,” he said.
Dr. Olatunji promised to continue rendering free genotype testing medical services to people interested in knowing their sickle cell status before their reproductive age to reduce sickle cell disease in the society.
He urged the government to make it compulsory for all about-to-wed people to provide a genotype certificate before marriage.
He said that knowing sickle cell status helps individual to make good choices in life, about health, family planning, and choice of life partner. Knowing ones genetic conditions, individuals can have an insight into their genetic conditions. Treatment options are also being optimised to suit an individual’s genetic makeup.
