The accident threw the people in Sehinde Callisto, Boladale and Church streets in Oshodi, into mourning, with some people who knew the food vendor crying and wailing.
It was gathered that the accident, which happened at the intersection of Sehinde Callisto and Church Road in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area of Lagos State, around 5p.m., attracted sympatisers.
According to an eye witness, who spoke with the Harbinger, “the girl and her mother were getting ready for evening sales at the junction when the driver of the car accidentally struck them while attempting to connect Liverpool Road enroute Oshodi-Apapa Expressway from Sehinde Callisto Street.
“The mother and daughter had just came down from the tricycle that brought them to the intersection for the evening sales and were about to unload their food, when the tragedy struck.”
The eyewitness added: “The car crushed the girl to the extent that her intestine gushed out before the car hit the electric poll beside the canal which stopped it from plunging into the canal.
“The driver may have been intoxicated, which would have caused him to speed uncontrollably on the street or he may have been attempting to avoid the open channels in the middle of the road. It’s also possible that he accidentally increased the accelerator rather than applying the brake when he lost control and struck the food vendor and her daughter”.
However, officers from Akinpelu police station acted timely and stopped the angry crowd from burning the car and lynching the driver, who had been taken into custody. The injured food vendor was taken to hospital and the girl’s body was taken to mortuary.
