Our state is changing not smelling — Lagos govt
THE Lagos State government, has dismissed insinuations that the state is smelling, adding that it is committed to a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to ensure a clean, resilient and liveable city.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, said this while reeling out measures the state is taking to demonstrate it is evolving.
Recall that a TikToker and member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ushie Uguamaye, also known as Raye, in a viral video titled ‘Lagos smelling’, said this while laying her mind bare against the economic hardship faced by Nigerians under President Bola Tinubu.
Raye has since apologized for the comment.
Reacting to the viral video, Mr Wahab said: “Lagos is not smelling, it is evolving -toward sustainable waste processing, modernised landfill management, cleaner waterways and structured sanitation systems.
“The present administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu remains steadfast in its commitment to building a cleaner, more sustainable city through strategic environmental initiatives.
“The state government is fully committed to environmental sustainability and has developed a comprehensive, multi-sectoral approach to ensure a clean, resilient and livable city. Waste and sanitation challenges in a rapidly growing mega city like Lagos require structural solutions, not sound bites or political rhetorics.”
He explained that within the next 18 months, the state will close Olusosun and Solous landfills, transitioning them into modern Transfer Loading Stations, where waste will be sorted, compacted and redirected to recycling facilities.
Speaking on the ban on styrofoam food packs, Wahab said: “The State has commenced the phasing out of single-use plastics while promoting sustainable alternatives and extended producer responsibilities among manufacturers.
“The state government has signed multiple Memoranda of Understanding MOU with international partners to develop waste-to-resource initiatives that will ensure that Lagos remains at the forefront of waste recovery, recycling and energy generation.”
On open defecation, he said: “In addressing open defecation, the state is embarking on continuous sensitization and the construction of an additional 150 public toilets which will be complemented by another 250 to be built through public-private partnership.”
