18yrs: Ideal age for varsity students — Dr Ismaila Olatunji
FORMER leader of the House in Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area Constituency 1, Dr. Ismaila Sule Olatunji has said that 18 years is the ideal matured age for higher institutions.
According to him: “18 years is the age of maturity and adulthood. The university environment and course materials are intended for grown minds and brains.
“Requiring students to be at least 18 years old before entering university can be seen as a reasonable standard for several reasons, but opinions may vary based on educational systems and cultural norms.
At 18, students are generally more emotionally matured and better equipped to handle the independence and responsibilities of university life.
This age often expected to be correspond to a point where students have finished secondary education and are better prepared for the academic and social demands of higher education.
In many countries, 18 is the age of legal adulthood for students to make decisions independently, sign contracts, and take on more responsibilities, which can be essential for navigating university life.
By 18, students have had more time to explore their academic interests and career goals, which can help them make more informed decisions about what to study at university.
Though some students, just like myself, take gap years before starting university to travel, work, or engage in other experiences that provide personal growth, which can enhance their readiness for university. This often happens around the age of 18.
However, Nigeria, students may enter university younger, especially if their secondary education is completed earlier. In such cases, entering university at a younger age can be the norm, and students are expected to adapt.
Ultimately, the ideal university entry age depends on various factors, including the individual's readiness, the education system, and the cultural expectations of society. While 18 is a common age for starting university, some students may be ready earlier or later, and education systems should allow for that flexibility.
