Shogunle needs modern market —Chief Ayodele
Chief Rahmon Ayodele Morenikeji is a retired civil servant, a community leader and a rallying point in Shogunle town. In this interview, Rahmon spoke on the challenges facing his community and his expectation from government. Excerpts:
I am Chief Ayodele Morenikeji, Babalaje of Shogunle. I attended Ikeja Local Government Primary School 1955-1962; Yaba Academy 1963-1965, Federal Technical College Yaba 1977-1979 and Yaba College of Technology. I worked with University of Lagos for many years before I retired in 1994.
I am a member of executive officers, Federal University Pensions Association and currently Chairman, Bello Owosho Community Development Association (CDA), member, Shogunle Progressive Club and member Community Development Committee (CDC), Oshodi- Isolo LGA.
How active have you been in the community?
I was born and grew up in Shogunle and I have been part of its development. As Babalaje of the community, I have seen to the affairs of the community.
When Bello Owosho CDA was inaugurated, I was the first secretary of the association with Chief Ayinde as chairman. Later, I became acting treasurer, and rose to the post of chairman.
Has CDA lived up to its expectations?
CDA has done creditably well, likewise, CDC has equally performed. We are co-operating with all tiers of government. We want local government to encourage us more and support the aged and retired elders. in Shogunle, we need good roads, most of our roads are bad.
They need to be repaired. Bello Owosho Road was tarred over fifty years ago, we urge government to help in re-tarring the road. We need street light, development has not spread to Ward E1 in Oshodi-Isolo, there is lack of electricity and public schools, we want modern market. The current market we have has turned to a black spot and residential place. We want a decent and beautiful market.
Shogunle is relatively peaceful and there is no inter-tribal relationship, what is the magic wand?
We have been living happily among ourselves, both Hausa, Igbo, Niger-Deltans and Yoruba in Shogunle. Whenever there is any disagreement, we always nip it on bud before it degenerates to crisis. Shogunle Police Station DPO and his team are also supporting us in maintaining peace in the community.
What is your expectation from government?
We want government not to focus on developing Oshodi alone, but should spread it to other communities such as Ewutuntun, Shogunle, Alasia etc.
What is your effort in curbing youth delinquency?
I have been giving counselling to youths in my area, through distribution of pamphlets and seminars to tell them what is expected of them in the community, and it is yielding positive results. I want our youths to be useful and emulate good successful ones that have brought development to the community.
